Dental inlays and onlays are types of tooth restorations that are fabricated in a dental laboratory or using our CEREC Computer-Aided Design (CAD)/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technology and are customized to the shape and color of your tooth. These fabricated teeth, which are typically made from porcelain, are bonded to your existing tooth, providing very strong, durable restorations.
An onlay restoration is placed over the cusp of your tooth, where an inlay is smaller and stays within the cusp. Typically, inlays and onlays are ideal in situations where teeth have large decay or an existing large filling, as they are cosmetic alternatives to silver fillings and far more conservative than crowns. Traditional fillings can decrease the strength of teeth by up to 50% whereas inlays and onlays actually increase the strength of a tooth by up to 75%.
